Automating Sibling Rivalry Blog

In my house growing up, automation took sibling rivalry to a whole new level - from an all-out immature brawl, to an intelligent, though probably still immature, battle of strategy and wits. I don't remember how the fight started (who does?) but the bottom line was we were fighting and we were going to make each other miserable as a result. My opening move was to turn the TV off on my brother, so I went to the touch screen in my room, and turned off the TV in the family room where he was watching. He at first assumed it was just a power outage or something and turned the TV back on, and I promptly turned it off.

EXTRA EXTRA! Read All About It... Blog

I'm thrilled to announce the latest issue of Home Smart Home, for Spring 2013, launched hot off the printed press in Amsterdam in honor of the ISE tradeshow--Integrated Systems Europe. This solid fourth issue of Home Smart Home brings some of the most unexpected environments to the forefront of automated living, including an unusual trot to a ranch just outside of Miami, where even the farm animals benefit from a few of the most innovative automated features we’ve seen yet. Better still—you needn’t even take our word for it: If you read this via the free tablet version of this magazine, you’ll also enjoy a video version of the story where you'll hear it all straight from the horses' (and owner’s) mouths.

4K TV Resolution: Is it the New "3D" or Something More? Blog

I recently read a blog post from Electronic House explaining that the most recent 4K resolution trend that is just being introduced to the market is more important than 3D. They even claim that, down the road, it will be more widely accepted than 3D as well. For those of you that have never heard of 4K resolution, it is basically quadruple the image quality of full HD, plus it has the capability to produce passive 3D content that you'd actually consider watching. As the author mentioned in his article, TV makers have been trying to push 3D down our throats for the past several years now. In spite of this it has just never taken hold—mainly because of lack of 3D content and the requirement of wearing special glasses while watching TV.

Home Automation. It Ain't Just About Lamp Control. Blog

I can remember the exact moment when I started in home automation. My wife and I were much younger and she had “inherited” a lamp timer; you know, one of those plug-in-the-wall, hog-the-whole-socket, ugly-as-sin, monstrous things you plug your lamp into so you can try to fool would-be predators into thinking someone was home. Being a computer “professional,” I thought there had to be a better way. Soon enough, I was installing an X-10 light switch.  Suddenly, I could program complex schedules for my outdoor lights; something impossible with those archaic plug-in things.
